30% NO cap Federal Tax Credit on Geothermal installations through 2016

In October 2008, geothermal heat pumps were added to section 25D of the Internal Revenue Code. This created a 30% tax credit for costs associated with qualified geothermal equipment “placed in service” through the end of 2016. Property is usually considered to be placed in service when installation is complete and equipment is ready for use. However, if the system is part of the construction or renovation of a house, it’s considered placed in service when the taxpayer takes residence in the house.

Ground-Source Heat Pumps

A ground-source heat pump takes advantage of moderate temperatures below ground to boost energy efficiency throughout your home. It can save you energy and money by extracting underground heat in the winter and transferring heat back into the ground in the summer. Now with the Renewable Energy Program, you can receive a rebate of $217 per ton, up to a maximum of $1,200 per residential customer, for the installation of a ground-source heat pump.
